Pre Star Skating Program

Pre Star Skating Program

Pre Star Program Expectations

During this program skaters will learn figure skating skills and a few introductory figure skating elements. Once skaters have completed the Pre Star skating program they will have completed Level 6 (Stage 6) and be prepared for the Junior Figure Skating program.

Figure skating elements will be introduced at a very basic level and skaters will have improved the overall quality of their skating skills in every area. During each season skaters can expect to have improved or learned eight skating elements. By the end of the Pre Star program skaters will have learned forward stroking, backward stroking, edges, a forward to backward jump on one foot, power jump, a 1 and 2 foot spin and a drag.

Pre Star Program Delivery

The Pre Star skating class is taught in groups of about a 1:8 coach to skater ratio. Coaches will start the class by teaching and practicing the elements with the skaters. Coaches will then use teaching aids such as toys (for tot programs), pylons and markers to create small courses for skaters to go through the elements of the program. This will allow skaters to practice the elements that have been taught while coaches can informally assess their skills.

During these classes program assistants will go around to assist skaters individually when they identify skaters that need additional assistance.

Pre Star Program Prerequisites

This program is open to any skaters between the ages of 3 to 12 that have NOT yet passed Level 6 (or Stage 6). All skaters must have a CSA approved helmet.

Pre Star Program Assessment

During the Pre Star program skaters will be assessed both formally and informally. Coaches will informally assess skaters during the skating program to see if skaters are correctly learning the skating skills that they are being taught and if not to see where skaters need improvement. Once a skater is able to complete a skating element consistently three times at an acceptable standard the coach will fomally assess this by checkmarking the element on the skater's skating record sheet.
